Description

The 1910 Kentucky Derby was won by a horse named Donau, owned by Nashville beer empresario William Gerst. Donau raced an inordinate amount, even by early 1900s standards. He was known for a fiery temperment, going as far as to simply lie down on the racetrack if prompted too hard by racetrack employees. There is a plaque in his honor in a small neighborhood in Nashville where the Nashville Brewing Company was located in 1913, where Donau died.

The plaque’s existence is strange. How many historical markers dedicated to horses are there? We choose to believe that the plaque exists as a testament to Donau’s spirit; rebelious and stubborn in the face of abuse. Stay strong, Donau. We salute you.

Printed on Comfort Colors 1717 shirts. They’re sized for adults and cozy for every day wear.
